If Tokyo were a person she'd be a very tough cookie to categorise.

Old-fashioned and fiercely proud of her traditions, yet an early adopter and innovator on the technological front.

Mild-mannered and super polite among strangers, but something of a wild child among friends.

Dressed like a corporate warrior during her long workdays and like a Victorian lady with broad-rimmed hat, long gloves and parasol, outlandish anime character in clashing prints or modern traditionalist in an updated kimono off duty.

Fussy about her food in terms of quality, but equally happy to eat at an izakaya (Japanese gastro pub), kaiten-zushi(conveyor belt sushi restaurant) or yatai (outdoor stall) as at ryotei (traditional restaurants featuring haute Japanese cuisine and geisha entertainment) or one of Tokyo's many Michelin-starred establishments (the city has 314 stars and counting). Even the self-heating lunch boxes at train stations taste like something a Japanese grandma might make.

"There are definitely things here that are unusual (if you've ever watched a Japanese TV show you'll understand what I'm talking about) but that's not how most people here live their lives and it's not necessarily normal for them either.

"It's a similar thing with those news stories that talk about Japan's booming boyfriend or girlfriend rental business. Yes, those exist and there are some interesting social issues at play that have apparently created a need for those sorts of services. But people here aren't all walking around with rental husbands and wives and chances are a lot of Japanese people find that sort of thing just as weird as non-Japanese people."

Tao and her husband fell in love with the Japanese capital on holiday a few years ago so when she landed a job there as a community manager for a local company, deciding whether to accept was a no-brainer.

She suspects her positive first impressions of Japan would be similar to most expats'.

"I loved the vastness of the cities, the strong ties to history and culture, the mindfulness of people towards others and the great hospitality."

She found settling in "fine", saying that while her limited Japanese language skills can pose problems and make it difficult to befriend locals, Tokyo is a surprisingly easy city to adapt to.

A public transport system so efficient that trains sometimes apologise for leaving early, low crime rate (the Economist Intelligence Unit named it the world's safest city in 2016 and 2017), clean streets and opportunities to get to know people from around the world are among the best things about living there in her view.

"I've always wanted to experience life in a big city that's closer to the rest of the world and has lots happening and for me, Tokyo offers that."

On the downside, she says many in Japan are seriously overworked and it's easy to feel like you're missing out on a lot when you can't communicate with the locals in their own language.

But she finds that even negative aspects of life there can contain hidden positives.

"The Japanese work culture is notorious worldwide for really bad reasons and there are some serious problems that need addressing. But Japanese workmanship, commitment to detail and work ethic when applied to the right areas in the right way is quite admirable."

While Tao believes that Tokyo is the best place for her right now, she feels that the quality of life is generally better in New Zealand. The air is fresher, the beaches are superior and it's far more socially progressive than Japan, particularly in terms of gender equality, she says.

"New Zealand isn't perfect but the whole perception around women's roles in Japanese society is so outdated and it's frustrating and heartbreaking that things like the recent news about Tokyo Medical University deliberately lowering women's entrance exam scores still happen here."

Jessica Gerrity, also from Auckland, and Murray Clarke, from Alexandra, also found life in Tokyo fairly easy to adapt to. Although, like Tao, Jessica believes Japan could learn a lot from New Zealand about gender equality.

Female politicians are a bit of a rarity in Japan so Jacinda Ardern has caused quite a stir over there, she says.

"Prime Minister Ardern's pregnancy and the birth of her child were discussed at length on national current affairs programmes. It became a source of positive and negative discussion, which I thought was better than no discussion at all… [It] has shown Japan that flexibility, thinking outside the box, new ways of working and open mindedness are areas in which New Zealand is at the forefront."

She also reckons Japanese dads could learn a lot from their Kiwi counterparts.

"A father who makes time for fathering would be just amazing. Japan talks about the country's low birth rate and greying population but not much is being done about it. Having children is seen more and more as a time consuming, expensive and tiring matter and most, if not all, of the child rearing is left to women. Perhaps if fathers over here were more like Kiwi dads, more hands on and involved, the birthrate might see a turnaround."

Jessica believes it's a common misconception that Japan is super expensive. She has found rents to be lower in Tokyo than in Auckland, although apartments are smaller and built very close together.

And while you can easily pay ¥20,000 (NZ$275) for a meal at one of Tokyo's Michelin-starred restaurants, a set meal in a regular restaurant including a main, rice, miso soup and pickles will only set you back about ¥1500 (NZ$20). You can get generous-sized bowls of ramen for about ¥800 (NZ$11) and bowls of beef or noodles for about ¥400 (NZ$5.50), she adds.

Japan has a great nomihoudai (all-you-can-drink) system, she says, which could see you pay as little as ¥1000 (NZ$13.75) for all the beer and wine you care to consume in three hours.

Murray, however, who runs a recruitment business in Tokyo, says life can be difficult if you're not earning a "reasonable income".

Notorious work culture justified

Like Tao, Jessica and Murray agree that the Japanese typically work way too hard.

"People work hours and hours past finishing time (zagyo) and to come home at 10:30pm or so is just average," Jessica says.

Murray says his team works much longer hours than their counterparts in New Zealand and Australia, admitting he often feels pangs of envy when colleagues in Sydney clock off at 6pm.

Murray too believes Tokyo offers a fantastic way of life. So good in fact that he's no longer sure he will return to New Zealand to live.

"It's incredibly safe, the variety of food and restaurants is great, the people are nice, the city is big and there are always new places to explore," he says.
